UV coating is a unique process based on photopolymerization, forming a film through a chemical reaction to light rather than simple solvent evaporation. Consequently, operating a UV coating production line requires a different set of protocols compared to traditional painting. Ignoring these technical nuances can lead to unnecessary production downtime and quality defects. Below are the four critical pillars for successfully managing a UV production line.
Zero Contamination: UV coatings are chemically sensitive. They must never be mixed with other types of paints (like PU or NC). Because UV formulations are typically thicker (higher viscosity), they must be stirred thoroughly before use to ensure consistency.
Thinner Restrictions: Do not add thinners or solvents unless explicitly specified in the manufacturer’s technical manual. Unauthorized dilution can disrupt the curing process and ruin the finish.
UV paints are formulated specifically for their application method. The physical properties required for a Roller Coater, a Curtain Coater, or a Spraying Machine are entirely different.
Precautions: Always ensure the UV system matches the application method. Using a spray-grade UV paint on a roller coater (or vice versa) will result in poor adhesion, uneven thickness, and rejected products.
The Leveling Phase: Due to the high viscosity of UV paint, it often requires time to settle after application. We recommend installing a Heating/Leveling Tunnel before the UV curing machine. This heat helps the paint flow out smoothly, eliminating surface defects like “orange peel.”
Temperature Management: In cold environments, paint viscosity increases, leading to uneven coating. To counter this, utilize the Water Circulation Heating System on the roller coater. This maintains the paint at an optimal fluidity, ensuring a smooth, uniform application regardless of room temperature.
Proper Cleaning: Long-term operation inevitably leads to paint buildup. For cleaning, it is recommended to use Ester Solvents, which are effective at dissolving UV resins.
Disposal of Solvents: Solvent used for cleaning contains uncured monomers and must not be recycled or mixed back into virgin paint. It should only be used for the initial “rough” cleaning step or disposed of properly.
Storage Rules: UV paint is photosensitive. It must be stored strictly according to the packaging instructions—typically in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight—to prevent the paint from gelling or curing inside the container.
